Celest, Our First Flash Game

We had this crazy idea that it would be fun and profitable to write flash games. This is our very first one. It has changed a lot on the way to fruition and there are already many plans for further flourishes. We want to add a level editor/builder and shared high score boards most immediately (as soon as we figure out what the score would be).

We kicked around many ideas and had a few false starts in beginning development. Our first idea for this game involved ships slinging mass to change orbits and battle other ships also in an orbit. (N3wton is a neat game that utilizes newton’s third law of motion in an interesting way). This ended up being too complex for our first go at a game. After much quibbling and procrastinating, Ryepup put in a serious effort to get a simple game up. This game is what became Celest.

Then we let it sit for about 3 months. This wasn’t intentional and we got a lot of other “great” stuff done in the process, but we were failing to meet our goal of putting out at least one flash game. After our March 1st department meeting, where we reaffirmed our desire (yet again) to put out a flash game, I decided to take advantage of a brief lull at work to finish up and meet our goals. This involved play testing and tweaking of levels. Our original goal was 10 levels in the first release, but in an effort to get this one out the door, I left it at 7 (the last of which might be impossible).

Our game started in ActionScript 2 and the mtasc, but moved up to mxmlc.exe and Flex shortly before release (for reasons to be discussed in a later blog post). This blog will relate any insights we have while making the game, as well as any anecdotes we find humorous or interesting enough to share. Our hope is that, in the future, this blog will provide a little help to people just starting out writing flash games.
